Maddie Bishop - Amazing Achievement
A Kelowna student surprised her school – and her parents – by being selected to participate in the prestigious SHAD summer university enrichment program.
Maddie Bishop, a Grade 11 student at Studio9 School of the Arts, didn’t tell her parents or her teachers about the essays she was writing in hopes of being chosen.
Instead, she surprised them with the announcement she has been accepted.
Maddie stage manages the Studio9 music, dance and theatre performances.
SHAD is a Canadian summer enrichment program for high-achieving high school students that runs every year at 13 participating universities. It is focused on business, science, mathematics and engineering.
The application process is rigorous. Last year, more than 2,000 students applied.
Madeline Bishop - Ted Rogers Scholarship
Madeline Bishop received a surprise that all prospective students dream of accepting – a large $10,000 scholarship to pursue post-secondary education.
Bishop learned she was the recipient of the Ted Rogers Scholarship, an award which grants the recipient four installments of $2,500 over four years, during a surprise reveal.
“This is so amazing,” Bishop exclaimed.
She has been a dedicated volunteer with the YMCA of Okanagan’s Boys in Action program for the past two years, making her a perfect fit for the award which recognizes young leaders in the community and ensures they have the financial capability to attend post-secondary education.
“I love volunteering and working with children with special needs,” said Bishop.
“I want to be a Psychologist, which is what I am going to school for this fall at the University of British Columbia Okanagan.”
